Rutgers Women's Basketball Coach C. Vivian Stringer Reaches 1,000 Win Milestone

C. Vivian Stringer has had one of the most impressive coaching careers in college basketball and she added another milestone Tuesday night. Stringer notched her 1,000th career victory as her Rutgers Scarlet Knights defeated Central Connecticut 73-44.

Fans at the Rutgers Athletic Center were greatly anticipating the moment and came decked out in Stringer t-shirts. Many also made signs and had large cardboard cutouts of the iconic coach's head.

When the final seconds of the game ticked away, red-and-white confetti fell from the arena rafters and Kool & the Gang's "Celebration" blared from the speakers. The fans chanted "CVS" to honor their coach.

Prominent celebrities like Kobe Bryant, Whoopi Goldberg and every living coach in the 1,000 wins club pre-recorded tributes to Stringer that aired after the game. Players and coaches from her various stops made the trip to the game and New Jersey governor Phil Murphy also attended.

In her postgame remarks on the court, Stringer credited her family for her success.

"This was only done with the help of my family," said Stringer. "They lifted me up at times when I didn't think I could make it."

In reaching 1,000 victories, Stringer joins four other women's college basketball coaches on the Division 1 who have reached that threshold. Over her 47-year career, she has led the programs at Cheyney State, Iowa and Rutgers.

Stringer led Cheyney State to the 1982 NCAA Division 1 championship game, the first one ever held. She guided Iowa to eight NCAA Tournaments and one Final Four trip in 12 seasons.

Stringer has experienced her greatest success with the Scarlet Knights. In 18 seasons, Rutgers has been to the NCAA Tournament 14 times and made two Final Four appearances.
