Seven-Time Olympic Medalist Amanda Beard Speaks at Mental Illness Awareness Week Luncheon

Seven-time Olympic medalist Amanda Beard has become a powerful speaker on the topic of mental illness.  She described her own battles with clinical depression speaking at a special event in South Bend, Indiana on October 4th. 

Beard took part in a fundraiser for Oaklawn facilities that are in four locations in the state.  The luncheon at Palais Royale was also tied into Mental Illness Awareness Week. 

Beard was able to share some of the highlights from her swimming career.  She talked about the stuggles she experienced in the sport and the emotional toll it took on her as well.  

In 1996, Beard first swam on the Olympic stage as a 14-year-old in Atlanta.  She won three medals, becoming the second-youngest American swimmrer to medal.  

Beard went on to the compete at the Games in 2000, 2004 and 2008.  She matched her 1996 medal haul with one gold and two silvers at the 2004 Olympics. 

During her career, Beard also won seven World Championship medals.  Swimming World Magazine named her American Female Swimmer of the Year twice.
