Former Olympian Lisa Fernandez is someone that all young softball players can look up to. She will speak to a group of promising athletes as the keynote speaker at the PONY Girls' Fast Pitch World Series.
The Laredo PONY League announced Fernandez's upcoming appearance yesterday. She will speak during the tournament's opening day ceremony on July 18th.
The PONY League Softball World Series takes place July 19-22. There are six different age groups competing and the tournament will start with three pool games before a double-elimination bracket.
Fernandez was part of the 1996, 2000 and 2004 teams that won an Olympic gold medal. She was also the only pitcher to appear in all three Olympic finals.
Over her Olympic career, Fernandez went 7-2 with a 0.37 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 74.2 innings. She holds tournament records for single-game strikeouts and fewest runs allowed.
Fernandez was a four-time first-team All-American and two-time national champion at UCLA. She currently serves as an assistant coach for the Bruins.
