Fans of the St. Louis Cardinals stretch out across the entire Midwest. Those Cardinals devotees in Quincy, Illinois will have a special visit on February 2nd.
St. Louis manager Mike Matheny will be in town as the featured speaker for the Western Illinois Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Matheny will give his personal testimony at the fundraising banquet and talk about how sports can positively impact society.
The banquet is being held at the Oakley-Lindsay Center. A VIP sponsor reception starts at 5 p.m., doors open to the general public at 5:30 p.m., and the event starts at 6:15 p.m.
Attendance is free, but donations are encouraged. Those who want to hear from Matheny should register and be able to fill a table of eight.
Under Matheny’s watch, the Cardinals have not missed a beat. They have made the playoffs in each of his four seasons as manager and advanced to the World Series in 2013.
Last season, St. Louis won 100 games for the first time with Matheny and he finished second in National League Manager of the Year voting. So far, he has won 375 games in his managerial career.
Matheny was also a successful player, spending the best seasons of his 13-year career with the Cardinals. He was regarded as one of the best defensive catchers of his generation and won four Gold Gloves.
