St. Louis Cardinals Mike Shldt will be in North Carolina next month to help honor a group of very special people. He is serving as the featured speaker at the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame induction.
The ceremony will take place on January 15 at Park Street United Methodist Church Family Life Center. Shildt is a Charlotte native, so he has some familiarity with the area.
Shildt was also coached in American Legion ball by a member of the Belmont HOF's 1996 class. He would go on to coach in the state at West Charlotte High, UNC-Asheville and UNCC.
Shildt was awarded the permanent managerial job in St. Louis last year after taking the post on an interim basis. He guided the Cardinals to a 40-28 record after two seasons as a coach on their major league bench.
Shildt has had great success as a manager in the minor leagues as well. He won back-to-back league championships with the Johnson City Cardinals before winning the Texas League with the Springfield Cardinals in 2012.
Shildt began his professional baseball career as a scout with Major League Baseball. He joined St. Louis in the same capacity before becoming a part-time minor league coach in 2004.
