In a move that surprises no one, Nike has locked up the potential number one pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Former LSU star Ben Simmons has agreed to a multiyear endorsement deal with the sports apparel giant.
Simmons actually broke the news to the world with a video on LeBron James' multimedia site, Uninterrupted. Adidas also reportedly bid to endorse the much-hyped prospect.
If Simmons lives up to his vast potential, this would be a home run deal for Nike. The opportunity to market around a player who is projected to end up in a major market with Philadelphia and Los Angeles holding the top two picks in the draft is something they could not pass up.
This past season, Simmons averaged 19.2 points, 11.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game as a freshman for the Tigers. He was named a consensus first-team All-American and a member of the All-SEC first team.
Simmons also garnered SEC Freshman of the Year honors. It was no surprise after arriving in Baton Rouge as the top prospect in the Class of 2015.
Simmons is originally from Australia, but came to the U.S. to play high school basketball at powerhouse Montverde Academy. As a senior, he was Gatorade National Player of the Year and a McDonald's All-American.
