Johnny Dawkins is well-known to basketball fans and insiders alike. However, as the new head coach at the University of Central Florida, he is trying to get his name out in the Orlando area.
On October 20th, he will speak to the East Orlando Chamber of Commerce. His appearance is part of their Coffee Club EAST series and takes place from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the Buffalo Wild Wings in the Waterford Lakes area.
Dawkins will talk about his program and specifically address the topic of team building. The event is free and open to the public on behalf of sponsor Duke Energy.
Dawkins knows a thing or two about building a basketball program. From 2008-2016, he was the head coach at Stanford and the Cardinal won two National Invitation Tournaments in addition to making it to the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA Tournament in 2014.
Prior to arriving in Palo Alto, Dawkins was the associate head coach at his alma mater, Duke University, for over a decade. As as player for the Blue Devils, he keyed the school's arrival on the national scene.
Dawkins set a Duke record with 2,556 career points, won the Naismith Player of the Year award in 1986 and led the Blue Devils to the NCAA title game that same year. He was also a first round pick of the San Antonio Spurs and played nine NBA seasons.
