UConn Women’s Basketball Coach Geno Auriemma Speaks at U23 USA Basketball Opening Training Session

UConn coach Geno Auriemma is one of the most respected names in women's basketball. He was able to give words of inspiration on Monday night to athletes competing to make up USA Basketball's Under-23 team. 

Auriemma spoke at the opening night of training for the squad. His talk went beyond X's and O's and instead focused on what it takes to be an Olympian and a good teammate. 

36 players are vying to make the team that will be selected at the end of the week. They will then head to Japan to compete in a tournament in the middle of August. 

Auriemma has led the UConn women to 11 NCAA national championships. He has been the head coach of the Huskies since 1985 and in that time the program has captured 23 regular season conference titles. 

Auriemma has posted a 991-135 record and led the Huskies to six undefeated seasons. He is the winner of seven Naismith National Coach of the Year awards. 

Auriemma has also been the head coach of the U.S. women's national basketball team since 2009 and led them to two gold Olympic medals. He is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
