The Little League World Series is a beloved American tradition and one of baseball’s all-time greats made a stop by there as teams head towards the finals this weekend.  On Tuesday, former New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera made an appearance as he was inducted into the Little League Hall of Excellence.

Rivera played Little League in Panama in 1985.  He would go on to a legendary baseball career that was highlighted by championships and the all-time saves record.

In addition to the honor, Rivera also threw out the ceremonial first pitch.  When speaking at the event, he recalled his own Little League days and advocated for the protection of youth pitchers.

There is no question Rivera will be a first-ballot Baseball Hall of Famer when eligible.  He racked up 652 saves over a 19-year career spent exclusively with the Yankees.

As a result of pitching for the storied franchise, Rivera became a postseason legend as well.  He won five World Series titles, was named World Series MVP in 1999, and holds playoff records for ERA (0.70) and saves (42). 

Rivera is honored by the Yankees with retirement of his #42 jersey in Monument Park.  He remains an inspiration to many even in retirement with his charitable efforts with the Mariano Rivera Foundation.
