The lessons one can learn from the career of Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. extend far beyond fun stories from the diamond. On Tuesday, he spoke at Methodist University's 4th annual Presidential Lecture Series.
Ripken's presentation was titled, "Get in the Game: Success in Sports and Life." He talked about eight traits that helped him set the consecutive games streak record.
In addition to giving his own presentation, Ripken answered questions from Methodist University President Ben Hancock and students. A near-capacity crowd turned out in the 1,100-seat Huff Concert Hall in the Reeves Fine Arts Building on campus.
Ripken spent his entire 21-year career with the Baltimore Orioles and played in a record 2,632 games. He totaled 3,184 hits and 431 home runs and is known as one of the best offensive shortstops in baseball history.
Ripken also won two Gold Gloves for his defense. He was a 19-time American League All-Star and two-time Al Most Valuable Player Award winner.
Ripken was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. He has had a successful business career post-baseball and is the president and CEO of Ripken Baseball, Inc.
