For his work on the national Fox broadcast, Baseball Hall of Famer John Smoltz was a breakout media star during the World Series.  Fresh off that successful call of the Chicago Cubs historic win, he served as the keynote speaker at an event for the  Augusta Rescue Mission.  

The organization helps homeless men in Richmond County, Georgia.  The Dinner with Champions banquet took place on Monday at First Baptist Church.  

There were 325 people that turned out to hear Smoltz speak and nearly $40,000 was raised.  He was joined by former Georgia Tech coach Bill Curry, who also spoke. 

Smoltz was one of the most versatile pitchers during his 22-year career.  He spent all but one of them with the Atlanta Braves and was one member of a dominant pitching rotation in the 1990s.

In 1996, Smoltz arguably experience the pinnacle of his career, going 24-8 and winning the National League Cy Young Award.  The year prior, he helped the Braves win the World Series and further cemented his status as one of the best postseason pitchers in baseball history. 

Overall, Smoltz won 213 games and recorded over 3,000 strikeouts.  He also spent time in his career as a closer, saving 154 games.
