What is the perfect way to celebrate your 85th birthday? For baseball legend Willie Mays, it is having a San Francisco cable car dedicated in your name.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is fittingly dedicating cable car #24 to Mays. Even more ironically, the car was originally rebuilt in 1958, the same year that the Giants came to town from New York.
Mays will attend today's ceremony and apparently get a ride in the cable car. There are no other current details released by the SFMTA.
During his incredible career, Mays was an All-Star a record-tieing 24 times. He had 3,283 hits and 660 home runs, both among the best marks in baseball history.
Mays was a two-time National League Most Valuable Player. He is known as one of the greatest defensive outfielders of all-time and won 13 Gold Gloves.
In 1979, Mays was elected on the first ballot into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He has remained one of the game's best ambassadors in retirement and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom last year.
