It has been nine years since former New York Yankees great Bernie Williams played in a major league game, but on Friday he will finally make retirement official. Williams will sign retirement papers at Yankee Stadium prior to his former team’s game with the New York Mets. He will also throw out the first pitch that night.
Williams is going through the formality in order to clear the way for his jersey retirement and plaque ceremony in Monument Park. That will take place on May 24th.
He was a five-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner who played his entire 16-year career in New York. The center fielder ranks fifth all-time in career hits for the franchise and won the 1998 American League batting title.
Williams was in his prime as the Yankees captured four World Series titles and he was MVP of the 1996 ALCS. He paces the Yanks in career postseason homers and RBI.
Today, Williams still delights crowds around the country, but in a different way. He is an accomplished musician and has released two studio albums. Moving Forward, his second studio album, was nominated for a Latin Grammy.
For Yankees fans though, there is no question that #51 patrolling the outfield is an indelible image in team history. Soon that number will be remembered forever.
