C.J. McCollum has sought to make a quick impact on the greater Portland community during his two NBA seasons. This week, the Blazers guard held his youth basketball camp in the area at ClubSport.
For three days, McCollum took great interest in training the 80 or so campers on hand. He also held a camp last week at his alma mater, GlenOak High School, in Canton, Ohio.
McCollum was the 10th overall pick of the 2013 NBA Draft out of Lehigh. Unfortunately, his pro career got off to a rocky start when he missed the first six weeks with a foot injury.
Since, McCollum has bounced back to become a serviceable role player on a Portland team that has been to the playoffs in each of his first two seasons. He had a banner series this past postseason against the Memphis Grizzlies, scoring 26, 18, and 33 points in three consecutive games.
That could be the springboard McCollum needs to take the next step in his career. He was the first Lehigh player ever drafted and had a storied tenure at the school.
McCollum was a two-time Patriot League Player of the Year and the conference’s all-time leading scorer. In his final collegiate season, he scored 30 points in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, leading the 15 seed Mountain Hawks over two seed Duke.
