Chicago Bulls fans are hoping a familiar face can be the catalyst to push them over the top and get the franchise back to a championship level. On Tuesday, the Bulls unveiled Fred Hoiberg as the 19th head coach in team history.
Hoiberg has built up a stellar coaching reputation over the last five years at his alma mater, Iowa State. The Cyclones went 115-56 during that period of time.
ISU also went to four NCAA Tournaments and won two Big 12 conference tournament titles under his watch. Their 18 wins over the top 25 during the last two years led the nation.
Prior to heading home to Iowa State, Hoiberg held a front office position with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He assumed that gig after a ten-year playing career that saw him suit up for the Bulls from 1999-2003.
In his final NBA season, Hoiberg shot 48% from three with the Timberwolves to lead the league. He set statistical bests while he was playing for Chicago during the 2000-01 season, averaging 9.1 points per game and starting 37 games.
Hoiberg has always been a leader and picked up the nickname “The Mayor” while playing for the Cyclones in his hometown of Ames. After turning around Iowa State as a coach, he hopes to have as much impact in the Windy City.
