This weekend will probably be one Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz remembers for a long time. Even with the Red Sox long removed from postseason contention, Ortiz was able to give his longtime fans a September thrill.
He hit two homeruns on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays to become the 27th man to hit 500 homeruns. As a result, his apparel company, New Balance, made special cleats for the occasion.
It makes sense that New Balance would do something special for a player that has long been one of the most beloved in baseball. ESPN’s Darren Rovell first publicized the cleats via Twitter.
They feature a blue and red color scheme with Ortiz’s logo on the back and several “500” references. Buoyed by a strong second half, the 39-year-old has been as potent at the plate as ever, currently hitting .275 with 34 homers and 95 RBI.
Those impressive totals likely means that Ortiz will finish with his third straight 30 homer, 100 RBI season. He is a nine-time All-Star and has finished in the top 5 in American League MVP voting five times.
Ortiz also led a resurgence of the Boston franchise and was a signature piece on three World Series winning teams. There is a very good chance he could be the first player to make the Baseball Hall of Fame after spending the majority of his career as a designated hitter.
