The USA Track and Field Junior Olympics is coming to Lawrence, Kansas this summer. One of the most successful American Olympic stars in recent memory will also be on hand for the festivities.
Decathlon standout Ashton Eaton is going to be in attendance for the event that runs July 24-30. He will serve as a keynote speaker and hand out medals to winning participants.
There will be 8-10,000 participating athletes and over 30,000 people who make their way to the Junior Olympics. The region is expected to see an economic impact of $14-$22 million.
Eaton is the current world record holder in the decathlon and indoor heptathlon. He won gold in the decathlon at both the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.
Eaton first made waves in the track world while at the University of Oregon. He was a five-time NCAA champion and won the coveted Bowerman award in 2010.
The following year, Eaton captured a silver medal in the decathlon at the World Championships. He also garnered gold medals in the event at Worlds in 2013 and 2015.
