Former NFL and CFL football quarterback Don McPherson gave a talk about preventing sexual and domestic violence at a conference in Topeka last Tuesday. The Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic conference kicked off last week and asked McPherson to give a speech about the role that men have when it comes to this kind of violence.

The Davey O’Brien Award winner got his stardom for the sport during his college years while he was attending Syracuse University, and he was the runner up to the 1987 Heisman Trophy award. In 1988 McPherson was drafted to the Philadelphia Eagles and then played for Houston Oilers before going into the Canadian Football League. In 1994 McPherson retired from the sport and went on to become part of Northeastern University’s staff at their Center for the Study of Sport in Society. He later on became the executive director of the Sports Leadership Institute at Adelphi University.

During his speech at the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence conference McPherson told the audience that they don’t need to be directly involved in this kind of situation in order to be part of the solution. The former footballer is a human rights activist and feminist, so he was able to really connect with the attendees on the subject matter.
