This past weekend, an ex-Red Sox fan favorite took time to sign autographs for some of his faithful followers in New England. Tim Wakefield made the signing appearance at the Sports Authority at University Station in Westwood, Massachusetts.
Cards were provided to those waiting in line and Wakefield signed from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Many remember him as one of the most successful knuckleball pitchers in recent times.
Wakefield went 200-180 in his career with a 4.41 ERA and over 2,000 strikeouts. He is third all-time on the Red Sox wins list behind legendary players Cy Young and Roger Clemens.
No Boston pitcher ever pitched as many as the 3,006 innings Wakefield totaled. His 17-year career was also dotted with two Red Sox World Series wins and an All-Star appearance in 2009.
Perhaps most importantly, Wakefield was noted for his charitable efforts during his career and won the Roberto Clemente Award in 2010. He continues several initiatives today, including his role as Honorary Chairman of the Red Sox Foundation.
