Florida State football players are getting more than just on-field instruction this preseason. A series of speakers have been brought in to teach responsibility and other valuable life lessons.
People who have spoken to the team include former NBA player Chris Herren, and former NFL players Tim Brown, Maurice Clarett and Michael Clayton. One-time NBA official Bob Delaney, a Navy Seal, and experts from other field have also been in to speak.
While addiction derailed a once-promising basketball career for Herren, he has found other ways to make an impact. He has been sober for seven years and speaks to groups across the country about how to avoid addiction and bounceback from mistakes.
Brown is one of the newest members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history. “Mr. Raider” went to nine Pro Bowls and finished with nearly 15,000 receiving yards.
Like Herren, Clarett had a series of substance abuse and legal issues that followed a banner campaign as a freshman running back at Ohio State. Following his 2010 release from prison, he has become a positive influence, helping other athletes avoid the pitfalls that doomed his career.
Even though he has not played since 2010, Clayton remains an impactful personality in the community. His Generation Next Foundation helps a variety of childrren’s causes in the Tampa Bay and Baton Rouge areas.
