Despite not having a franchise for over a decade, baseball tradition still looms large in Montreal. That was apparent when former Expos legends Pedro Martinez and Tim Raines were honored as part of a two-game exhibition series back in the city at Olympic Stadium.
Martinez and Raines were brought out prior to the first game on Friday. They received a loud ovation and both expressed a desire to see baseball return to Montreal.
Over 106,000 tickets were sold for the two games between the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox. It matched or exceeded the success of games held at Olympic Stadium in 2014 and 2015.
Martinez was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame last summer. He was one of the most dominant pitchers of his time, racking up a 219-100 record, 2.93 ERA, and 3,154 strikeouts.
Martinez was an eight-time All-Star and won three Cy Young awards. He led baseball in ERA five times, the American League in strikeouts three times, and won a World Series with the Red Sox in 2004.
Raines is one of the best lead-off hitters of all-time and has the opportunity to get into the Hall of Fame in his final year of eligibility in 2017. He compiled over 2,600 hits and 800 stolen bases in a banner career.
Raines made seven straight All-Star teams while with Montreal from 1981-1987. He also won the National League batting title in 1986, led the NL in stolen bases four times, and won three World Series championships with the New York Yankees later in his career.
