Former Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie recently spoke at an event for a cause close to his heart. He was the keynote presenter at a fundraiser for ABC of NC, a non-profit that assists those with autism.
Flutie's son, Doug Jr., has a low-functioning form of autism called Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. He was able to speak first-hand about the difficulty of being a parent with a child who suffers from the disease.
Flutie was also able to mix in some levity with stories from his football career. The event was held at Forsyth Country Club in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Throughout his time in the public eye, Flutie has been known as someone who has defied the odds. In 1984, he pulled off a now-iconic Hail Mary pass to lead Boston College over Miami.
That would be the seminal moment of the season that allowed Flutie to go on and win the Heisman Trophy. Despite his college success, Flutie had trouble gaining footing in pro football.
After winning three Grey Cups and six Most Outstanding Player awards in the Canadian Football League, Flutie finally got a shot to shine again in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills. In 1998, he was named to the Pro Bowl and also won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award.
