Former standout pitcher Pedro Martinez has a powerful story to tell about his journey in baseball. He will share some of the advice he has learned as speaker at the All-State Rhode Island High School Sports Awards banquet.
The third annual event takes place on June 20th at the Rhode Island Convention Center. Over 600 student-athletes from 29 different sports will be honored.
Last year, more than 1,500 people show up to the dinner, which is sponsored by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island. Tickets officially go on sale April 1st.
Martinez posted a 219-100 record, 2.93 ERA and over 3,100 strikeouts during his iconic career. He was an eight-time All-Star and won the American League Cy Young in 1997, 1999 and 2000.
Martinez led baseball in ERA five times and the AL in strikeouts three times. He was particularly known for his time with the Boston Red Sox and helped the franchise break an 86-year drought by winning the World Series in 2004.
Martinez has his #45 jersey retired by the Red Sox and is a member of the team's Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015.
