Former Heisman Trophy Winner Bo Jackson Speaks at Leadership Breakfast

There is no denying Bo Jackson's status as one of the most famous athletes in state of Alabama history. The former Heisman Trophy winner and Auburn Tigers star was right at home earlier this month as the keynote speaker in Birmingham at The Foundry's Leadership Breakfast.

The event raises funds each year for men who are homeless, have addiction issues or are ex-inmmates. Jackson himself spends extensive time working with the disadvantaged through his charity, the Give Me a Chance Foundation.

During the speaking engagement, he talked about how asking for help makes you a strong and successful person. He spoke directly to how difficult it is for people to speak up in times of need.

“It takes a lot to admit that you have a problem. It takes a lot to ask for help. It takes a lot to accept that help and do something with it in a positive way,” Jackson said.

Jackson lore began at Auburn, where he won the 1985 Heisman after rushing for 1,786 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also played baseball for the Tigers and opted to pursue both sports professionally.

Jackson is the only athlete to have been selected to a Pro Bowl and named an All-Star in Major League Baseball. As a baseball player, he had four straight seasons with over 20 home runs.

Jackson reached the peak of his athletic career in 1989, when he hit 32 home runs and 105 RBI and rushed for a personal best 950 yards. He was also one of the early stars of sports marketing campaigns, gaining great notoriety for Nike's series of "Bo Knows" advertisements.
