Former Heisman Trophy and University of Georgia standout running back, Herschel Walker, is set to be the keynote speaker for the inaugural ETVarsity Best Preps banquet on June 16, 2015.
The event is presented by the Marshall News Messenger, the Longview News-Journal and Panola Watchmen newspapers and will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the Maude Cobb Convention Center in Longview, Texas. In addition to a reception, dinner and Walker's speech, the three newspapers will also be honoring outstanding student athletes who attend high school in their circulation areas.
Herschel Walker grew up in humble beginnings in Georgia, and overcame many obstacles as a youngster to become one of the best high school students and athletes that the state had ever seen. After high school he matriculated to the University of Georgia and became a college football legend, bringing home the Heisman Trophy in 1982 and finishing in the top three of the Heisman voting three times while playing for the Bulldogs. In 1985 he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys and would go on to have a successful 14 year NFL career.
During his speech the athletes and fans in attendance will hear Walker's inspirational story of achievement and perseverance that led to his legendary success both on and off the football field.
