A Chinese telecommunications expert is betting on one of the world's biggest sports stars to heighten brand awareness.  Huawei has signed soccer star Lionel Messi to be their global brand ambassador.

Huawei is the world's third largest manufacturer of smartphones.  The agreement with Messi is at least a two-year pact. 

Previously, he worked with Samsung in the telecom sector.  Messi will immediately star in a campaign for the Huawei Mate 8 phone.

Messi recently scored a goal in Barcelona's win over Arsenal as they move on to UEFA Champions League quarterfinal action against Atletico Madrid.  It is just another chapter in a career that has seen him triumph on four other occasions with Barcelona in this tournament.

Messi has also won seven La Liga titles and is the only player to win five Ballon d'Or trophies.  He holds the single season and career goal records for La Liga.

Messi ranks second in all-time UEFA Champions League goals.  As captain of the Argentinian national team, he won an Olympic gold medal in 2008 and made it to the World Cup final in 2014.
