With the Major League Soccer season underway stateside, Heineken is launching a brand new ad campaign to soak up soccer fever in the U.S. Their year-long "Soccer Is Here" message began with two 15-second spots that aired nationally on Sunday.
New York City FC's David Villa is the star of one of the commercials. In his ad, he talks about the difference between playing oversees in Spain and then coming to America to grow the sport.
Additionally, a spot with U.S. soccer legend Landon Donovan also debuted Sunday. There will be a longer 30-second ad that comes out in the middle of March and a 15-second commercial with U.S. women's national team hero Carli Lloyd will drop in April.
Villa is the unquestioned star of NYCFC as the franchise begins its second season in MLS. The striker scored 18 goals in 30 matches last year and was named an All-Star.
With 59 goals in 97 international matches, Villa is Spain's all-time leading goal scorer and also holds the nation's record for World Cup goals. In 2010, he was awarded the Silver Boot as his country went on to capture the World Cup.
Prior to arriving in the U.S., Villa played his club soccer for top Spanish clubs like Valencia, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid. Over the course of his career, he won three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey crowns, and made it to the finals of the UEFA Champions League twice.
