The Sacramento Kings are following the lead of one of the NBA’s most successful franchises.  On the heels of the San Antonio Spurs hiring Becky Hammon last year as the first female assistant coach in NBA history, the Kings are also diving into the pool of women’s basketball legends to hire Nancy Lieberman to the staff.

Lieberman informed ESPN Radio’s Ian Fitzsimmons of the pending move via text.  She assisted Sacramento during the recent NBA Summer League in Las Vegas where Hammon also shined, leading the Spurs at the team’s head coach to a title.

Following an acclaimed coaching career, Lieberman has gotten plenty of experience around the game.  She was head coach of the WNBA’s Detroit Shock from 1998-2000 and also became the first woman to coach a men’s professional team with the D-League’s Texas Legends from 2009-2011.

More recently, Lieberman moved into the front office of the Legends and this past NBA season she served as an analyst on Oklahoma City Thunder games for Fox Sports Oklahoma. 

Lieberman was enshrined into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996.  She was a pioneer in women’s college basketball and played in several different pro leagues over her career.

At the age of 39, Lieberman competed for the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA’s inaugural season.  She originally gained acclaim at Old Dominion University, where she led the squad to back-to-back National Championships and was a three-time All-American.
