AT&T used social media platforms to build brand awareness during this most recent NCAA Tournament. One of the stars of their campaign was no other than newly-minted Basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal.
The initiative drew over a million viewers on Snapchat alone. Twitter and Facebook were two of the other platforms used in the promotion effort.
A collection of the content from O'Neal and others was also broadcast on the Jumbotron at NRG Stadium during the Final Four games and National Championship. The approach is part of a long-term strategy by AT&T, who has been building their own team of social media stars to create material.
Over his 19-year career, O'Neal was a 15-time All-Star and eight-time member of the All-NBA First Team. He won four NBA championships and was a three-time MVP of the NBA Finals.
During his first title run in 2000, O'Neal also captured his only league MVP award. That year, he won the second of two scoring titles.
O'Neal has had his number retired by the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat and his a member of the Orlando Magic's Hall of Fame. He currently remains in the public eye as a successful corporate pitchman and an analyst on TNT's "Inside the NBA".
