NFL Veteran Wes Welker spoke at the 13th Annual Sunland Derby Gala at the Sunland Park Racetrack Signature Showroom on March 21 that raised funds for United Blood Services. The event kicked off with some cocktail drinks at6:30 p.m. and a dinner at 7 p.m. with a silent auction going on in the background for some rare and valuable NFL themed items and experiences. Some of the prizes were a trip for two to a Dallas Cowboys game, some autographed Seattle Seahawks items signed by Russell Wilson, fancy jewelry, and a big prize of getting to sit with Welker in the VIP section at the Derby on March 22. It was a very fun and exciting sports-filled weekend, and people were happy to help out with a great cause.
The five-time Pro Bowl player first became known when he play for the Texas Tech football team and stayed with them over his four-year career in college. In 2004 he was not picked up through a draft, but after some complications with the San Diego Chargers, Welker decided to sign on with the Miami Dolphins where he became the second player in NFL history to return a kickoff and a punt, make a tackle and kick a field goal with the extra point all in one single game.
The Annual Sunland Derby Gala is a fundraiser before the actual local derby a couple days later. It is a good chance for the town to raise funds for a worthy cause, and this year the United Blood Services were the ones to get the benefit.
