Nancy Hogshead-Makar has used her platform as an Olympic champion for years to promote women in sports. The Phi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women honored her work last week with the Member of Distinction Award.
They announced the biennial award at their convention. It is just the latest in a series of awards celebrating Hogshead-Makar’s life and career.
She has been an advocate of Title IX protection and advancement for decades. Hogshead-Makar is currently CEO of Champion Women and serves on the board for the Association of Title IX Administrators.
Her law background has been vital in the promotion of Title IX iniatives. Hogshead-Makar graduated from Georgetown Law in 1997 and served as a Co-Chair for the American Bar Association’s Rights of Women Committee.
In December of 2014, the International Olympic Committee gave her their Woman of the Year award. The honor came 20 years after she swam her way to three gold medals at the Games in Los Angeles.
Hogshead-Makar took gold in the 100 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay, and 400 medley relay. She also picked up a silver in the 200 individual medley.
