Since he became the first professional active athlete to come out gay, former NBA center Jason Collins has been an advocate for LGBT issues.  On Thursday evening, Collins spoke to the Tom Homann LGBT law association in San Diego. 

He participated in a question and answer format with local newscaster John Carroll.  Collins was able to share his journey with the assembled crowd and explain what has happened in his life since coming out. 

After 12 years in the NBA, he decided to come out following the 2012-13 season.  The Brooklyn Nets would sign him in February 2014 and he would play 22 more games in the league before retirement. 

Collins was a first round pick out of Stanford in 2001 and played the first seven seasons of his career for the Nets.  For the Cardinal, he was a first-team All-Pac 10 pick and third-team All-American as a senior. 

Away from the court, his life’s mission is now to spread acceptance for LGBT rights.  In 2014, Time Magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. 

Collins was also a member of the inaugural class of the National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.
