Pro Softball Star Monica Abbott Gets Record Breaking Contract

Star softball pitcher Monica Abbott has agreed to a groundbreaking professional contract.  She is the first player to sign a million dollar contract in National Pro Fastpitch.

Abbott agreed to a six-year, $1 million contract with the Houston-based expansion franchise, Scrap Yard Dawgs.  It marks an important step for the NPF, which begins its 13th season with six teams and a 50 game regular season schedule.

There is no other known higher salary for any active woman in an American professional sport.  While the team salary cap for an NPF franchise is only $150,000, Abbott will make the majority of her money through easily obtained attendance clauses.

Abbott gained great notoreity during her collegiate career at the University of Tennessee from 2004-2007.  At the conclusion of her senior season, she became the NCAA Division 1 career leader in wins, strikeouts and shutouts.

As a senior, Abbott set the single-season strikeout record as well.  She was named the 2007 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year and the 2007 Women's Sports Foundation Sportswoman of the Year.

During her career, Abbott also won a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics.  She has spent eight seasons so far in the NFP, the last five with the Chicago Bandits.
