Boris Diaw has been a revelation for the San Antonio Spurs, much like many of their important reserve pieces. Diaw’s most important life work however has occurred off the basketball court.
He was recently apart of a tour of NBA stars that made their way to South Africa for an exhibition game. Diaw played with Team Africa that had other notables with connections to the continent like Luol Deng suit up.
As Sports Illustrated’s Jeremy Woo wrote though, Diaw has been doing good in Africa for quite some time.
He has been running basketball camps in Senegal since 2005. The country is near and dear to his heart because Diaw’s father is Senegalese.
This year, his foundation went to work with the SEED Academy to found a school for girls. Many male athletes have gone on to play college basketball in the United States through SEED.
Diaw is a rangy power forward who has been a vital part of the Spurs since 2012 and helped the squad win a championship in 2014. Last offseason, he inked a new three-year, $22 million deal with the franchise.
It was in his previous stop with the Charlotte Bobcats where Diaw really rounded into his own. He started 223 straight games for the team over parts of three seasons, averaging double figures in scoring, at least four assists a game, and over five rebounds per outing.
After playing in France, Diaw was selected in the first round of the 2003 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. Upon being traded to the Phoenix Suns, he won the Most Improved Player Award in 2006, averaging 13.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game.
