After one year as an NBA head coach, an NBA title run with the Golden State Warriors might vault Steve Kerr to the top of the coaching profession in the eyes on many.  Kerr’s Warriors squad took down the Cavaliers in Game 6 Tuesday night to win the franchise’s first title since 1975.

It was just what the doctor ordered to have one of the league’s most exciting teams placed in one of their biggest markets to be paired with a coach destined to breathe new life into the franchise.  When you combine regular season and playoff victories, Kerr racked up 83 wins, the third highest number in NBA history.

He played on the two other teams that stand above the Warriors, the 1995-96 and 1996-97 Chicago Bulls.  The fact that Kerr added to his winning pedigree while becoming the first head coach since Pat Riley in 1982 to be a rookie champion inspiring. 

Expect him to be a hot name as coaches and organizations look to try to duplicate the success.  Also, Kerr figures to be popular on the speaker circuit as those from outside the sports world seek to understand his brand of leadership.

Kerr played 15 seasons in the NBA, won five championships as a player, and became on of the greatest three-point shooters of all-time.  His 45.4 shooting percentage from long range is tops in league history.

In his post-playing career, Kerr had been a broadcaster and a front office executive with the Phoenix Suns before jumping into the coaching profession.  After learning from coaching legends like Lute Olson, Lenny Wilkens, Phil Jackson, and Gregg Popovich as a player, perhaps the bench was always where he was supposed to be.
