While the NASCAR Hall of Fame has only existed since 2010, it was a no brainer that legendary team owner Richard Childress would be included among those enshrined at some point. He got the call last week that he will be a part of the Class of 2017.
Childress' candidacy was voted on by a 53-person panel and one combined fan vote. He finished with 43 percent of the vote, good enough to place him among the top five vote getters.
Others that will join Childress in the class include fellow team owner Rick Hendrick and driver Mark Martin. The NASCAR Hall of Fame resides in Charlotte, North Carolina.
After a successful driving career that lasted over a decade, Childress really made his mark as a race team owner. Richard Childress Racing partnered with iconic driver Dale Earnhardt in the 1980's and the rest was history.
With Earnhardt, RCR went on to win six Sprint Cup titles. Childress was also able to expand his empire and his team became the first to win all three of NASCAR's championship series.
Today, two of Childress' grandsons race for RCR. Austin Dillon is featured in Earnhardt's legendary #3 car in Sprint Cup and Ty Dillon races on the Xfinityy Series.
