It is a busy time for retired basketball fan favorite Dikembe Mutombo.  Mutombo recently led a tour of NBA stars to Africa and will get inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame next Friday.

The once-dominant center also received news this week that he will be honored by one of his former teams, the Atlanta Hawks.  Mutombo’s #55 will ascend to the rafters of Phillips Arena on November 24th during a nationally televised game against the Boston Celtics.

In addition to the jersey retirement, September 1st, 2015, was also declared “Dikembe Mutombo Day” by Hawks CEO Steve Koonin. 

Mutombo will join Bob Petit, Dominique Wilkins, and Lou Hudson as other players to have their jerseys retired in Atlanta.  He played for the Hawks from 1996-2001 and is third in franchise history in blocked shots and rebounds per game. 

In his 18 NBA seasons, Mutombo made eight All-Star teams and won the Defensive Player of the Year Award four times.  He ranks second in league history in blocks. 

Following his playing career, Mutombo has become even more acclaimed for his tremendous humanitarian work.  The Dikembe Mutombo Foundation does a great deal of work in his home nation, Congo, and also domestically here in the U.S.
