Billie Jean King Biography

Billie Jean King has been one of the 20th century’s most influential and respected people. As a former number 1 in the world as a professional tennis player, she won 39 Grand Slams, including 16 women's doubles, 12 singles matches, and 11 mixed doubles crowns. King won the singles title at the inaugural WTA Tour Championships. From all of her success, King was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987, just four years after retiring from the game. Among other awards, King was named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year in 1967, she was the first tennis player to earn the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year Award, and was the first female athlete to be the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.  Since the later portions of her career to today, she has been an important part in the fight for equality and equal rights for all people.
