Brian Griese Biography

Brian Griese is a retired NFL quarterback and current quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers. He is also known for a successful turn as a sports broadcaster for ESPN that culminated in joining the Monday Night Football booth. As a player, Griese got his start as a walk-on at the University of Michigan in 1993. Griese took over starting QB duties in 1995, playing sparingly until fully securing the job during his 1997 senior season. His only full season as a starter would prove to be a good one, as Griese and Heisman winner Charles Woodson led the Wolverines to an undefeated record and a national championship.

Following his graduation, Griese entered the 1998 NFL Draft, where he was round by the Denver Broncos. He inherited the starting job after John Elway retired in 1999, and he did not disappoint, earning Pro Bowl honors in the 2000 season. Griese left Denver in 2002, eventually finding a home with the Miami Dolphins. One season later, Griese would sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and after a two-season stint in Chicago, eventually retired as a Buccaneer in 2008.
