Brian Kelly Biography

Brian Kelly is one of the more successful coaches in college football today who currently serves as the head coach at LSU. Prior to joining the Tigers, Kelly presided over one of the most successful periods in Notre Dame history. From 2009-2021, he became the Fighting Irish's all-time winningest coach and took the program to one national championship appearance and two berths into the College Football Playoff.

 

Born in Massachusetts, Kelly attended Assumption College in 1979, playing linebacker for the team for four seasons. In his four seasons at the school, Kelly lettered every year and became a star for the team’s defensive squad. Following his graduation, Kelly decided to pursue a coaching career, serving as linebackers coach and defensive coordinator at Assumption until leaving in 1987 to become the defensive coordinator at Grand Valley State. Kelly was promoted to the head coaching position in 1991, leading the team for 12 years, winning multiple national championships on the way. 

 

In 2004, Kelly was named the head coach at Central Michigan, coaching the team for two seasons until leaving to serve as head coach at Cincinnati. In three seasons with Cincy, Kelly won two Big East titles.
