Charlie Ward Biography

Charlie Ward was one of the most stellar amateur athletes in the early 1990s as a standout football player, basketball player, tennis player, and despite not playing baseball in college he was drafted in the MLB Draft. Ward attended Florida State University where he was a member of both the basketball and football teams. In football, Ward started his final 2 seasons with the Seminoles, capping it off by leading FSU to their first ever National Championship in 1993. That season, he was also the winner of the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and the Davey O’Brien Trophy. Despite winning the Heisman, Ward’s smaller stature kept him out of the first round of the NFL Draft, causing Ward to pursue a career in the NBA Draft when the New York Knicks drafted him with the 26th overall pick. With his choice of professional careers, Ward became the only Heisman Trophy winner to play in the NBA. Ward spent 10 seasons as a point guard for the Knicks, making one trip to the All-Star 3 Point Contest and helping lead the team to the ’99 NBA Finals where the fell to the San Antonio Spurs. Ward made a name for himself off of the field as an advocate for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and by starting The aWard Foundation to help improve the lives of youth through sports.
