Christy Martin Biography

Christy Martin was a pioneer for female boxers. She went 49-7 with 31 knockouts in her career. Martin began her professional boxing career at the age of 21 in 1989. She ripped off 19 consecutive victories and then won the WBC women's Jr. Welterweight world championship. After several more wins, Martin won a decision bout on Showtime in 1996 against Deirdre Gregory that gained great publicity for the sport. That appearance led to her Sports Illustrated cover. Martin also had a significant fight that she lost in 2003 to Laila Ali. She retired from boxing in 2012. Martin is a member of the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame.
