Dave Concepcion Biography

Dave Concepcion played 19 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds from 1970 to 1988 and helped lead them to two World Series titles in 1975 and 1976 as a member of their famed “Big Red Machine” squad. Concepcion was born in Aragua State, Venezuela and signed with the Reds in 1967 at the age of 19. Three years later he made his MLB debut with the Reds at shortstop and would become a mainstay in their organization for nearly two decades. During his career he earned nine All-Star selections, won five Gold Glove Awards and two Silver Slugger Awards and was named the 1982 MLB All-Star Game Most Valuable Player. After his retirement he returned to Venezuela as the manager of the Tigres de Aragua, the team he played winter ball with for 20 years. In 2014 he was named vice president of the club. In 2007 the Cincinnati Reds honored his contributions to their franchise by retiring his legendary No. 13 jersey. Concepcion is a member of the Caribbean Series Hall of Fame, and is considered to be one of the best Venezuelan players in history.
