Dawn Staley Biography

Dawn Staley has experienced success at every step of her basketball journey. Staley is best known today as the dominant coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball program. She has presided over the action in Columbia since 2008, winning three national championships and making it to six Final Fours. 

Staley has been the Naismith Coach of the Year four times. Her South Carolina teams have won eight SEC regular season and eight SEC Tournament titles. 

Staley, a Philadelphia native, originally began her coaching career at Temple in 2000. She led the Owls to six NCAA Tournament appearances in eight years. 

One of the more remarkable facts about Staley's career was that she began coaching while at the height of her game as a player. She was originally the ninth overall selection in the 1999 WNBA Draft and played seven seasons with the Charlotte Sting and Houston Comets. 

Staley was a six-time WNBA All-Star and member of the league's 10th and 15th Anniversary Teams. She started her pro playing career in the ABL after becoming a two-time National Player of the Year and leading the University of Virginia to three Final Fours. 

Staley has also been a force for USA Basketball and was a three-time Olympic gold medalist as a player. After two gold medals as an assistant coach, she also won gold as Team USA's head coach at the 2020 Games.
