Don Nelson Biography

Don Nelson was a two-time All-American at the University of Iowa before joining the Chicago Zephyrs in 1962 as a third round pick in the NBA Draft. Over the next 13 seasons he played for the Zephyrs, Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics. During his time with the Celtics from 1965 to 1976 he helped team to five NBA Championships, which eventually led to his No. 19 jersey being retired by the franchise. After his retirement from the NBA he turned his focus to coaching and was hired as the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks in 1976. Over the next 34 years he served as the head coach of the Bucks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks. During that span he earned NBA Coach of the Year honors in 1983, 1985 and 1992. Coach Nelson retired from coaching with the Golden State Warriors in 2010 with 1,335 career wins, and went on to earn his degree in physical education from the University of Iowa in 2012.
