Dusty Baker Biography

Dusty Baker is a former MLB outfielder and manager who spent 19 years as a player and 26 years as a manager. As a player, Baker got his start with the Atlanta Braves in 1967, playing with the team for eight seasons before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. In eight seasons with the Dodgers, Baker earned multiple awards, such as two All-Star nods, a World Series championship, two Silver Slugger awards, and many more. After brief stints with the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics, Baker retired with a career batting average of .278 with 242 home runs and 1,013 RBIs.

Following his retirement, Baker turned his focus to coaching, earning his first managerial position with the San Francisco Giants in 1993, winning three NL Manager of the Year awards in ten seasons with the team. In 2002, Baker left the Giants to become manager of the Chicago Cubs, remaining with the team for four seasons. Baker managed again in 2008 with the Cincinnati Reds and coached the team for six seasons. He also led the Washington Nationals to playoff berths in 2016 and 2017 before becoming manager of the Houston Astros in 2020. Baker won his first World Series title as a manager at the age of 73 with the Astros in 2022.

Following the 2023 season and a loss in the ALCS, Baker retired from the bench. At the time of his retirement, he ranked seventh in baseball history in managerial wins. Baker was also the first manager to reach the playoffs and win a division title with five different franchises.
