Frank Solich Biography

Frank Solich is a retired coach with a well-respected legacy at both Nebraska and Ohio University. Solich played football during college at the University of Nebraska from 1963-65 where he was an All-Big Eight fullback and co-captain. During Nebraska’s victory over Air Force in 1965, Solich became the first Husker to run for 200 yards in a game and then became the first Husker to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. In 1992, Solich was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame. Solich’s coaching career began in 1966 when he took the position as the head coach for Holy Name High School. In 1968, Solich coached for Lincoln Southeast High School where he coached for eleven years and captured Class A State Titles in 1976 and 1977.

Solich returned to Nebraska in 1979 where he spent 19 seasons as an assistant coach. Four of those years he spent as the freshman team coach and 15 years were spent as the running backs coach. During this time, Nebraska won three National Championships and eleven conference titles. Solich took the reigns of the Huskers program in 1998, winning the Big 12 the following season and posting three double-digit win campaigns in six years. He spent the 2004 season away from coaching before being hired at Ohio University in 2005.

Solich had several notable achievements with the Bobcats. He became the all-time winningest coach in program and Mid-American Conference history, winning 115 games overall. Ohio was the four-time MAC East Division champion and went to 11 bowl games under his watch. He also was named MAC Coach of the Year in 2006 and led the team to their first top 25 ranking since 1968 in 2012. Solich retired from coaching following the 2020 season.
