Jay Bell Biography

Jay Bell grew up a military brat and was selected in the 1st round of the 1984 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins out of J.M. Tate High School in Cantonment, Florida. Just two years later he made his big league debut with the Cleveland Indians and remained in the majors for the next 17 seasons. During that time he saw action with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets. His best years came in the 90’s with the Pirates and Diamondbacks when he earned two All-Star selections and a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger at second base. In 2003 he hung up his cleats as a player but laced them up again immediately after to serve as the bench coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Since that time he’s served as a member of the advisory board of the Baseball Assistance Team, which helps former Major League, Minor League and Negro League players through financial and medical difficulties. He’s also made a return to coaching, serving as the Mobile Bay Bears and Pittsburgh Pirates hitting coach in 2012 before landing his current position as the bench coach for the Cincinnati Reds in 2013.
