Jay Williams Biography

Jay Williams is one of the greatest college basketball players ever. As a sophomore, Williams led Duke to the NCAA title and won his first of two NABC Player of the Year Awards.  That year, he broke the Duke single-season record for points that had stood for 49 years.  He also led the ACC with 21.6 points per game and finished second in the conference with 6.1 assists per game.  The following season, he again won National Player of the Year from several outlets and had the Blue Devils back in the Sweet Sixteen.  Williams' 2,079 points are good for sixth in Duke history.  On his Senior Day, his #22 jersey was retired and put in the rafters at Cameron Indoor Arena.  Williams was the second overall pick of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls.  After averaging 9.5 points and 4.7 assists as a rookie, a tragic offseason motorcycle accident derailed his pro career.  Williams made several comeback attempts, but would never play in an NBA regular season game again.  Today, Williams works as an analyst for ESPN.
