Jeff Bagwell Biography

Jeff Bagwell was the Houston Astros first baseman for his entire fifteen-season Major League Baseball career, lasting through the ‘90’s and early 2000’s. Bagwell was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1968 but grew up in Killington, Connecticut. He played baseball and soccer throughout his childhood before ultimately deciding to attend the University of Hartford on a baseball scholarship. Impressing people left and right as a Hawk throughout his collegiate baseball career, Bagwell was then drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 1990 MLB Draft. However, he was traded almost immediately to the Houston Astros and stayed with them for the next fifteen years. As an Astro, Bagwell became the MLB Rookie of the Year in 1991, a four-time All-Star, the National League MVP in 1994, a recipient of the Gold Glove Award and a three-time Silver Slugger Award winner. In addition, he honorably retired #5 for the Houston Astros. Bagwell was forced into retirement in 2005 due to an uncomfortable arthritic condition in his shoulder. After retirement, Bagwell returned to his beloved Astros to serve as their hitting coach for a short period of time.
